Buying Coloured Gemstones

Throughout history coloured gemstones have held a fascination, sometimes even a legendary power, for people of all cultures. In the earliest days, coloured gems were coveted as charms or amulets, to ward off evil. Later, their rarity and beauty established them as a status symbol, worn by the very powerful and the very rich.

Buying Coloured Gemstones

Today coloured gemstones are gathered from all corners of the world and new discoveries and modern mining techniques have made them more affordable. New varieties have also been discovered such as mandarin garnet and tanzanite, to add to the traditional selection of ruby, emerald and sapphire. However, of the more than 3000 minerals found on earth, only a small percentage qualify as gemstones due to their beauty, colour, durability and rarity.

Coloured Gemstone Jewellery

As a first step, think about the type and style and colour of jewellery that you are looking for

The same 4Cs used to establish the quality and value of diamonds are used for coloured gemstones, cut, carat weight, clarity, and most important of all, colour.

As with all other types of jewellery it is important to buy from a jeweller who you trust and feel confident with. We will give you all the advice you need to help make choosing your jewellery an enjoyable experience. You can select from our extensive range of coloured gemstone jewellery or Bill Hicks will be delighted to design a piece especially for you.

Colour

The more pure and vivid the colour, the more valuable the coloured gemstone will be. There are literally thousands of shades to choose from. Make sure you base your selection on personal taste and what looks best on you.

Cut

The cut of a coloured gemstone is of extraordinary importance. Quality cutting maximises the brilliance and scintillation of the stone and emphasises the beauty and richness of the gemstone’s inherent colour.

Clarity

Completely flawless coloured gemstones are very rare. Indeed inclusions in a stone provide proof that it is of natural origin, but should not be so visible as to detract from the beauty of the gemstone. However they have less impact on the value of a coloured gemstone than they do on the value of a diamond.

Carat Weight

Obviously larger stones are rarer, but some gemstones such as amethyst and tourmaline occur naturally in larger sizes, whilst ruby and sapphire are rarely found in sizes above two or three carats.
