Bill Hicks Spring 2009 Newsletter
I am pleased to say that we continue to be very busy, but where is the time going? It will be Christmas before we know it!
Pearls Always In Fashion
I see that pearls are enjoying a renaissance on the catwalk with pearl jewellery recently featuring in fashion shows by Lanvin, Louis Vuitton, Comme de Garcons and Luella. With the illuminating and flattering effect that they have on a woman’s skin, modern classics such as pearl strands and simple pearl pendants and earrings with subtle diamond accents are always going to be popular, but it’s interesting to hear that these timeless gems are again proving popular with the world’s leading fashion houses.
Caring For Your Diamonds
I am often asked for advice on how best to look after diamond jewellery and I have a one-page summary of what I consider are the most important points that I give to people when they ask this question.
If you would like a copy let me know next time I see you, or drop me an email and I will send you a copy. Alternatively you can click on the relevant page on my website at http://www.billhicksjewellery.com.au/caring-for-your-diamond-jewellery.php and print off a copy.
Christmas Is Coming
As I mentioned earlier, nowadays time passes all too quickly and it’s hard to believe that Christmas is just over the horizon. However if you are considering giving, or hoping to receive, a piece of jewellery for Christmas the time is fast approaching when you will need to make a decision. To avoid a last minute rush it is worth noting that making up a specially commissioned piece will take an average of three to four weeks. If you, or someone you know, have a tendency to leave things until the last minute I of course also have a selection of ready-made jewellery on display in my studio featuring diamonds, pearls and coloured precious gemstones that include items that make ideal gifts such as earrings, necklaces, pendants and bracelets.
A New One On Me
In my time as a jeweller I thought I had heard pretty much every term or expression used to describe a piece of jewellery. However a ring given to a single girl in a long-term relationship being described as a "postponement" ring is a new one on me! What next?
We're Now On Facebook
You can now find both Bill Hicks Jewellery Design and myself on Facebook. It’s another way for me to keep people in touch with what’s going on my the business, and it’s becoming an increasing important way of communicating in today’s world amongst all age groups. Recent research has found that one quarter of all internet usage in Australia is on Facebook. That's six and a half hours out of twenty-six and a half hours every week!
Huge Diamond Find In South Africa
A rough 507ct white diamond has been unearthed at the historic Cullinan mine in South Africa . Weighing just over 100 grams the diamond, which has yet to be named, is considered to be amongst the top 20 largest high quality rough diamonds ever found worldwide. It ranks alongside other illustrious diamonds recovered at the celebrated Cullinan mine such as the original Cullinan Diamond found in 1905 that weighed a mere 3,106ct! A spokesman for mining firm Petra Diamond said, “Initial examinations indicate that it is of exceptional colour and clarity.” It was found alongside three other exceptional diamonds weighing 168ct, 58.50ct and 53.30ct respectively.
Kind Regards,

Bill Hicks
