Q: I noticed you stress that virtually all of your jewellery is hand made. Can you please explain why this is so important to the quality of the finished jewellery?
A: The vast majority of jewellery that you will find in most “high street” jewellers is cast mass-produced. The only real benefit of this production method is its low cost, and therefore it’s used to make less expensive pieces of jewellery. Cast does not necessarily mean poor quality, as there is good quality available.
However hand made jewellery offers the very real benefits of durability, strength and security of setting. This adds significantly to the overall life of the jewellery. Hand made means that the precious metal has been toughened and compacted by hand during the manufacturing process through hammering, rolling, filing, and drawing down of the metal etc., with careful attention paid to quality throughout the process. The compact nature (molecular structure) of the worked metal, results in the hand made item weighing more than its cast counterpart.
In addition hand making means that each piece of jewellery made using this method is unique. Even if we repeat a design, not every detail will be exactly the same. This means that each piece of hand made jewellery has its own unique and individual character, just like its owner.
