Named from the Latin word for seawater this beautiful gem is related to the emerald. The stones come in a range of shades from greenish blue to bluish grey. Usually free of the inclusions that can make emeralds fragile, they are found in a number of countries including Brazil, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Russia and Mozambique. Reputed to protect sailors from the wrath of the sea, aquamarine is also regarded as the guardian of purity and innocence.
